5 affordable modifications for Porsche 924S/944
Throttle cam, air filter, DME relay, short shifter, strut brace: five modifications under €200 that improve response, precision or reliability on the Porsche 924S and 944.
Sumário
These five modifications each cost less than €200, fit with standard tools, and improve responsiveness, precision or reliability on the 924S and 944. We have fitted them on our own cars; these are the ones we recommend.
Short-throw throttle cam
At small pedal inputs the stock throttle feels soft and indirect, especially when you are driving the car hard. That comes from the shape of the throttle cam, which is progressive and therefore slow to open at low travel.
A short-throw throttle cam changes the relationship between pedal angle and throttle-plate angle, swapping the progressive curve for a linear one. Throttle response in the low-to-mid range becomes sharper. We explain the geometry in why the stock pedal feels soft and how the cam addresses it.

Performance air filter
The stock paper element is built for longevity and noise, not maximum airflow.
A performance oiled-cotton filter flows more freely, which is most noticeable at higher revs. Unlike the original, it can be cleaned and reused.

Solid-state DME relay
Hot-start trouble and unexplained cut-outs on these cars are often the DME relay.
The original unit uses mechanical contacts that wear with time and heat. After 30-plus years those contacts become intermittent. A solid-state relay replaces them with electronics that have no moving parts, so current either flows or it does not. Among cheap reliability work, this is usually the first change worth making.
If the hard starting persists after a new relay, the next suspects are the two bell-housing sensors: our guide to testing and replacing the speed and reference sensors walks through the checks.

Short shifter
The factory shift action is adequate for the period. Lever travel can feel long when you want quicker, more precise changes.
A short shifter reduces throw by roughly 30 to 40%. Shifts are quicker and more direct. Installation takes more work than the other modifications on this list: you need to get under the console to reach the mechanism. A jack and a clear procedure are enough.

Front strut brace
In hard cornering the body flexes slightly. That is expected: the front strut towers are only connected by the bonnet and the surrounding sheet metal.
A strut brace links the two towers with a rigid bar so they cannot spread under load, which stiffens the front axle. For street driving it is not essential. On track, turn-in is more precise and the steering is more consistent under load.

Beyond the five modifications above, we also make parts we fit on our own 924S and 944 cars. Two that pair well with a reliability refresh:

Where to start?
All five together stay under €500. If you pick one, start with the solid-state DME relay: it is the simplest, the least expensive, and it addresses a real reliability fault.
The short-throw throttle cam is available in the shop. For fitment questions, contact us.
