Porsche 924S/944 oil sump gasket: how to replace it without removing the engine
Replacing the oil sump gasket on a 924S/944 without pulling the engine can be fiddly. One simple trick PTFE tape or dental floss holds the gasket in place during refitting.
Replacing the oil sump gasket on a 924S/944 can quickly become a headache especially when you're doing it in situ, without removing the engine. The gasket tends to slip or shift the moment you offer the sump up to the block, and you'd need a third hand to hold everything in position before the first bolts can catch.
The trick: PTFE tape or dental floss
There's a straightforward way around this: use PTFE tape (plumber's tape) or dental floss to secure the gasket to the sump before offering it up to the block.
Step-by-step procedure
Clean the mating surfaces: once the sump is off, thoroughly clean the sump flange and the bottom face of the engine block. No trace of the old gasket, no grease.
Position the new gasket: lay the gasket on the sump, making sure every bolt hole lines up correctly.
Secure the gasket: thread a piece of PTFE tape or dental floss through the bolt holes, over the gasket, and tie a simple knot roughly every 2 to 3 holes. The gasket is now held firmly against the sump.
Offer up the sump: bring the sump up to the block. The gasket stays in place throughout the manoeuvre.
Start all bolts by hand: insert and finger-tighten all bolts before applying any torque.
Remove the ties: once all bolts are started, carefully pull the PTFE tape or dental floss out one by one from the outside.
Torque to spec: tighten the sump bolts to the specified torque, starting from the centre and working outward toward the ends.
PTFE tape pulls out cleanly without leaving any residue. Unwaxed dental floss works just as well.
